Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, giving a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert. Patients who suffer from a smaller field of vision due to saggy, loose skin on their eyelids will find an improved, larger field of vision after this procedure. Specifically, blepharoplasty can treat:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
Eyelid surgery is usually performed on men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles and have realistic goals for the improvement of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Good candidates for this surgery do not suffer from serious eye conditions, are non-smokers, and do not have a medical condition that would impair healing.
When a blepharoplasty is performed, Dr. John Michael Quinn makes an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid allowing for the repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissues, and/or removal of excess skin. In the case of a lower blepharoplasty, an incision is made below the lower lash line. Through this incision excess skin of the lower eyelid is removed. These incisions are designed for the scars to be well hidden within in the natural structures of the eye region.
In some cases an upper blepharoplasty can be covered under a patient's insurance policy. In order to find out if you are a candidate for this procedure and whether you could receive insurance coverage for the procedure, we suggest contacting Quinn Plastic Surgery Center for a consultation.
