How SkinPen II works
Skin Pen II’s microneedling system is an advanced collagen induction therapy. In other words, by creating tiny channels in your skin, your body is tricked into rushing revitalized extra collagen and growth factors to the treated area, which restores your skin and infuses it with vital nutrients. Collagen is a building block of healthy, youthful skin, but your skin’s supply of collagen is naturally diminished over time. Add on the effects of sun damage, and you have a recipe for premature signs of aging, lax skin, and dull skin. With this treatment, you are reintroducing fresh collagen and providing your skin with important proteins and growth factors that it needs to retain youthful elasticity and a clear complexion.
Your skin is part of your body’s natural defense mechanism and has powerful processes built in that go to work even at the slightest hint of injury. The SkinPen II creates microchannels, which set the three phases of wound repair in motion. A topical numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before the treatment. Then, a thin layer of serum is applied to the skin, and the appropriate treatment is selected for a particular type of skin. Then, the pen is glided across the area to be repaired in a gentle motion.
Stages of Healing
Once the surface of the skin is pierced, your immune system disinfects the wound by rushing blood to the site in a reaction called inflammation. The inflammatory reaction removes broken tissue and starts building new tissue.
New cells, type III collagen, and temporary elastin rebuild tissue, creating a fresh “extracellular matrix.” New blood vessel networks are constructed to supply the extracellular matrix as well.
Finally, the wound is fully closed and replaced with new tissues that are stronger cells; type III collagens are swapped out for type I collagens. In this phase, the exchange of collagen types creates a tightening, shrinking effect on the skin. Microneedling typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending upon the size of the area to be treated and the severity of skin damage. Your individual course of treatment will be determined by your skin care professional and is based on your treatment goals and the health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of three treatments spaced about four weeks apart. For patients with more severe skin issues, additional sessions may be necessary. There are many types of skin treatments that are marketed and many will be compared to the SkinPen treatment. However, not all microneedling treatments are the same.
Over-the-counter, take-home microneedling kits are available and promise the same results as professional-strength treatments. Take-home microneedling kits are inherently riskier because you are increasing the possibility of infection. Without professional care and outside of a clinical setting, you are exposing deeper levels of your skin (which is extremely vulnerable due to microchanneling) to risk.
