Preparing For Dr. Quinn's Medical Mission To The Dominican Republic Part II

In February, Dr. Quinn will once again be embarking on a medical missions trip to the Dominican Republic with Medical Aid for Children of Latin America (MACLA), a 501(C) 3 not-for-profit organization based in Kansas City, Missouri.

In the Dominican Republic, Dr. Quinn and other volunteers will be providing much-needed medical and surgical care to patients who would otherwise have to go without. MACLA volunteers, including Dr. Quinn, will be treating patients who often live in homes without heat, electricity, or plumbing. Many cook meals over open fires. They often come long distances to receive treatment, and many are screened in distant clinics and then sent for surgery or other treatment. Most have little to no preventive or primary medical care, and find that their problems are too complex or specialized to be treated by local medical facilities.

As we noted previously, Dr. Quinn and other volunteers will be treating patients for a variety of conditions, but the most common are cleft lip and palate repairs, burns, hand problems, and ear deformities. The procedures and treatments performed by Dr. Quinn and MACLA volunteers are life altering for many of these patients.

After Dr. Quinn and the other medical volunteers leave the Dominican Republic, MACLA continues to provide care by arranging for local physicians and case workers to step in and continue this necessary work. MACLA also arranges for long-term care and provides necessary supplies such as antibiotics, dressings, suture removal kits, casts, and wound care materials. While such supplies are commonplace in the United States, they are often too expensive or too difficult to obtain in countries such as the Dominican Republic.

To help support Dr. Quinn and MACLA in these missions, please consider either volunteering or making a contribution. Your contribution will allow MACLA, Dr. Quinn, and others to continue providing care and supplies to those in need. The surgeries and aid provided are life altering and affect infants, children, and adults alike. To make a donation, please visit MACLA’s website, or contact MACLA at info@macla.org or 816-455-3062.

Suggested donations and the care they provide include:

  • A $50 contribution provides for postoperative care, medicine, and bandages for one child.
  • A $500 donation covers the costs of surgery for a baby with a cleft lip and palate, one of the most common deformities in third-world nations.
  • A $1,000 gift will aid in buying medical/surgical machines and other necessary equipment.

While Dr. Quinn is in the Dominican Republic, Quinn Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center’s Aesthetic Center will be open. Our skilled aestheticians will be available to provide you with a range of treatments, including:
