What is Fat?
Fat can be perceived as a nightmare for most patients of ours. It can cause problems for your health, appearance, and overall self-esteem. Fat is stored in the body and is extra energy in your body and can even keep you warm during those cold winter nights. What many may not know is that fat is separated into two categories.
This is what we are trying to get rid of, as this type of fat results in weight gain and comes from diets and lack of physical activity. White fat tends to grow in mass amounts and should be kept from 15%-25% for men and 15%-30% in women. This fat can be easily burned or stubborn, depending on which areas of the body its on.
Also known as “Baby fat,” this is the fat that we need as it surrounds the organs and we can lose as we age.
Not all fat is bad, but white fat is what leaves many patients insecure and unhealthy with their bodies.

What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a viable option for patients who, after diet and exercise, still experience dissatisfaction with extra deposits of fatty tissue in certain parts of their body. Excess fat can be a result of poor weight management, but it can also be hereditary. Patients choose liposuction to enhance their body shape or to continue with healthy efforts.
White fat tends to be stubborn, making it difficult to burn off with diet and exercise. Liposuction is a great solution for those who are in good shape and health and want the stubborn fat gone. If maintained, the results of liposuction can be life changing and beneficial to those who undergo the procedure.
Types of Liposuction We Perform
Dr. Quinn and his staff are specialized to perform many types of liposuction. During your consultation, Dr. Quinn will examine your case and decide which method best matches with your health and needs. Some of the most common types of liposuction we perform include:
The most traditional form of liposuction. In this approach, small incisions are made in the area we are treating, and then we insert a small tube which extracts the fat out of the area, leaving a precise fat removal result.
At times, the hollow has trouble removing the fat. In this case, we will attach a device to the hollow tube and cause it to vibrate, so that we may easily remove the fat.
Laser Assisted (SmartLipo)
The most innovative approach to Liposuction. SmartLipo uses a laser beam to melt the fat, tightens the skin, and encourages the growth of collagen, to maintain a youthful look. SmartLipo is also the method of liposuction with the least amount of recovery time.
Regardless of which approach is best for you, Quinn Plastic Surgery is ready to help you achieve your goals. Every case is treated individually and choosing a method can depend on multiple factors include body type, medical history, the amount of liposuction you need, and your expectations with this procedure.
Liposuction can be treated to burn fat in multiple areas, such as:
- Abdominal Area
- Inner Thighs
- Outer Thighs
Some areas may require different types of liposuction treatments. Schedule a consultation today, so that we may help you understand which treatment goes best with your desired area.
Contrary to popular belief, the ideal candidate for liposuction is actually in good health and of moderate weight. This is mainly for patients who exercise regularly and eat healthily, but can’t seem to rid themselves of excess fat that remains lingering. The skin should be elastic as it should close back once the treatment is finished.
Liposuction is a treatment that only goes as far as you take it, so not already being in good health and physical shape may put you in worse circumstances than before you received the treatment. Liposuction is about maintaining and keeping the fat off. Dr. Quinn will be able to determine if liposuction is right for you.
Your safety and satisfaction is our main concern and please ask the doctor about any questions that you may have regarding preparation, procedure, and recovery.
Dr. Quinn and his staff will examine the areas you want to be treated and recommend which treatments to undergo. We will then create a treatment plan that suits your expectations and goals. Medical history and health history will be inquired about, so be sure to disclose any information about any medications you may be taking, and your current state of health. If deemed a good candidate for a liposuction procedure, you will be given the opportunity to schedule your surgery, although there is no obligation to do so. Dr. Quinn will contact your primary health care provider to ensure that this surgery won’t compromise your health. For three weeks before the procedure, please avoid any smoking, alcoholic drinking, and blood thinners. Continue to eat a healthy diet and ensure that you are getting enough sleep as well. Your body needs to be at full health for a smooth procedure and a speedy recovery.
The night before the procedure, be sure to shower with antibacterial soap and to refrain from eating and drinking after midnight. It is important to be comfortable on the day of the procedure, so feel free to wear clothing that you’re most relaxed in.
Depending on the treatment area and the type of liposuction a patient receives, the actual procedure may slightly vary. However, most of the procedures typically take around 1-2 hours. The procedure begins with inserting either a local or general anesthesia and marking the location of the incision.
Procedures take place at an outpatient surgical facility in Overland Park. The liposuction procedure involves making a small incision at the treatment area, through which Dr. Quinn inserts a metal tube called a cannula. The cannula is used to gently suck away the excess fat cells within the treatment area. Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, Dr. Quinn closes the incision site.
Recovery following liposuction is relatively short, but it may take some time for you to see the final results. Initially, compression garments may be used to reduce post-surgical swelling. You may also undergo processes to drain excess fluids or have medication administered as a precaution for infection. All pre and post-surgical decisions will be discussed Dr. Quinn to ensure treatment satisfaction.
Once the procedure is done, you will be wrapped in a surgical garment which will help reduce swelling and assist with healing. After we apply the bandage, you are free to go home, as long as someone takes you home.
Alternate and Ancillary Procedures
Some patients may either request or be recommended to undergo another procedure at the same time as liposuction. Some of the most common procedures of these include:
This procedure eliminates excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to create a more slimmed body contour. Liposuction can be paired with this procedure to further the results.
Mothers who have suffered weight gain after pregnancy may find that liposuction is an ideal option for them. A mommy makeover procedure can sharpen the look several regions of the body, leaving you with your pre-body shape again. This procedure consists of 2-3 procedures to help moms get more comprehensive results. During the initial consultation, Dr. Quinn can help you determine which procedures are best for you.
We will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that you are recovering well.
After the procedure, you must wear the garment for up to three weeks. However, exercise and other physical activities are permissible after three days. Once you can return to physical activity, we recommend that you maintain a lengthy lifestyle to have lasting results with your liposuction procedure.
As your body adjusts to its new shape, the skin may at first appear loose. The skin gradually tightens around the new, slimmer figure, and the results are completely natural-looking. It is entirely possible that no one will ever know that you had liposuction at all.
The price of liposuction depends on the patient’s individual goals and if any ancillary procedures will be performed. At your consultation, Dr. Quinn will provide you with a price that meets your expectations and goals. Please contact us now to schedule your consultation and take the first step to looking your best.
