A breast lift — also known as mastopexy — is an extremely effective breast contouring procedure that addresses the inevitable effects of gravity, breastfeeding, and aging. Following a breast lift, you will have an elevated and reshaped bust line that lends a beautiful new contour to your body. Some women undergo a breast lift with their breast augmentation procedure to enhance their results.
At Quinn Plastic Surgery, Dr. John Michael Quinn is highly experienced in performing a range of breast enhancement procedures to help women achieve their desired bust. Contact our offices in Kansas City to request a consultation.
When breasts first begin to grow, they are located high on the chest wall, which is considered perky and youthful. However, due to factors such as age, weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, genetics, or gravity, the breasts can begin to sag. This sagging of the breasts is known as ptosis. There are various degrees of breast ptosis, which is determined by the relation of the nipple-areola complex to the inframammary crease (natural breast fold).
Using a special anchor incision technique, Dr. Quinn will lift the nipple-areola complex so that it is slightly higher than the inframammary crease. If the areola has become stretched or enlarged, he can also reduce its size. Finally, he will reshape the breast tissue for enhanced contour. A breast lift will not change the size of the breast. If a patient desires larger, lifted breasts, a breast augmentation can be performed in conjunction with a breast lift.
Dr. Quinn is a board certified plastic surgeon who has been voted “Best Plastic Surgeon in Kansas City” by KC Magazine five years in a row. Request a consultation with Dr. Quinn by contacting us online.

Degrees of Ptosis
There are varying degrees of ptosis, determined by the relation of the nipple-areola complex to the inframammary crease. The degree will help Dr. Quinn create an individualized surgical plan for your specific case.
- Degree 1: The nipple-areola complex is level with the inframammary crease
- Degree 2: The nipple-areola complex is located below the inframammary crease by 3 cm or less.
- Degree 3: The nipple-areola complex is more than 3 cm below the inframammary crease.
- Pseudoptosis: The nipple-areola complex is above the inframammary crease, but there is a substantial amount of tissue situated below the crease.
It is unusual for a woman to have perfectly uplifted, equal size breasts, no matter their age. There are factors though that can dramatically affect the breasts elevation moreso. Dr. Quinn often performs breast lifts on women who:
- Have lost a significant amount of weight
- Have breast-fed and are experiencing sagging
- Are unhappy with the positioning of their areolas
- Have experienced breast sagging with age
If you’re a healthy woman who wants to address sagging breasts because of any other aforementioned reasons, a breast lift may be a good option for you. Future pregnancies and breastfeeding will affect results, so it is best to wait to get a breast lift until you are done having children. Women interested in larger breasts may be better suited for a breast augmentation. Contact Quinn Plastic Surgery in Kansas City to request a consultation to find out what a breast lift can do for you.
Mastopexy Technique We Perform
Dr. Quinn only performs breast lifts with an anchor pattern incision. He has found that this technique provides optimal results for his Kansas patients.
An anchor mastopexy, also called an inverted T mastopexy, is designed for women who have any degree of ptosis and excess breast skin. This technique will not only lift the nipple to an attractive position, but it will also reshape the breast tissue so that the breasts sit higher on the chest wall.
This technique is performed using incisions around the areola, from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and along the breast crease. The resulting shape is similar to an anchor. This technique provides the most lift compared to other breast lift techniques.
Breast lift surgery takes between one and three hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Dr. Quinn will mark your breasts prior to surgery to provide accurate guidelines for incisions that will be made during surgery. Dr. Quinn then begins the procedure by making the incisions and removing any excess skin. At this point, the procedure may or may not include inserting breast implants to restore the breast to its original shape and fullness. This option will already have been decided during the consultation. The breast lift may involve moving and resizing the areolas. Dr. Quinn will reshape the breast tissue and then close the incisions with sutures.
A breast lift is part of a family of procedures that is often performed in a Mommy Makeover. A Mommy Makeover is a combination of breast and body procedures designed to help mothers regain their pre-baby body.
The procedures most commonly performed in a Mommy Makeover include a breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction.
If you are only interested in breast enhancement, a breast lift is very commonly performed at the same time as a breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is a very customizable procedure. Patients can choose the size and shape of the implant, as well as the implant insertion location and its placement in relation to the chest muscle. Dr. Quinn will, however, offer his expert opinion as to what he thinks would provide you with optimal results.
Please feel free to ask if you could benefit from any of these related procedures during the consultation.
You will be wrapped in post surgical bandages to help support the breasts at their new elevated position. Drains may also be placed to catch any excess fluid. Dr. Quinn will provide detailed instructions on how to care for them until they are removed a few days later.
Breast lift surgery requires anesthesia, so someone will need to drive you home following the procedure. Depending on the extent of the operation and your occupation, you will need to take anywhere from a few days to a week off from work to recover. If you have children or live alone, you should ask somebody to stay with you during this time to help out. During the recovery, you may feel some discomfort, bruising, and swelling. As your body heals, you will require a lot of rest. However, you should get up and walk around every few hours, as well as do some simple exercises as directed by Dr. Quinn. These activities will help promote blood circulation and speed up recovery.
You will be asked to come in for follow-up appointments after the surgery. Dr. Quinn likes to check in personally with all of his patients to make sure that they are healing according to schedule. After breast lift surgery, women have told us that they can finally wear a strapless dress with confidence, and not be self-conscious during intimate situations.
Dr. Quinn requires all patients to come in for a consultation prior to booking their mastopexy surgery. The consultation is an important step of the breast lift process when the doctor can listen to your concerns and understand your goals for the surgery. Depending on what you hope to achieve, he may recommend a breast augmentation in addition to or as an alternative to a breast lift. Dr. Quinn will perform an examination in order to analyze your chest anatomy, but he also asks that patients get a mammogram prior to surgery. This information will allow him to create a personalized surgical plan that will provide you with optimal results.
Dr. Quinn will offer his expertise and answer any questions you may have.
He will go over the breast lift procedure in depth, as well as preparation and recovery. However, please feel free to ask any other questions or voice any concerns that may arise. Many patients bring in a list of questions they have to the consultation. Cost will be covered during the consultation.
The price of a breast lift procedure will be discussed during the consultation. Breast lifts are personalized procedures and factors such as anesthesia, technique, and post-operative garments can all affect the cost. Once Dr. Quinn has been able to draw up a procedural plan, he will be able to offer an accurate cost estimate. With a breast lift, as with any other breast surgery, communication with Dr. Quinn is key so that you understand the procedure, the result and the aftermath. Make sure you discuss your goals and expectations with your surgeon.
